Raja Ampat

Literally means Four Kings named under the four biggest islands. This archipelago has the highest underwater biodiversity in the world.

Destination Highlights

Raja Ampat (the four Kings) has the richest marine biodiversity on the planet. A couple of surveys conducted in 2001 and 2002 by Conservation International and the Nature Conservancy found staggering data that it has 75% of the world-known coral species, 1,508 fish species and 699 mollusc species.

Above the water, Raja Ampat is also a bird-watching paradise. One professional bird-watcher listed over 130 bird species on top of the famous crimson plumed Red Bird of Paradise and Wilson’s Bird of Paradise during his islands hopping trip in Nothern Raja Ampat.

So, you may wonder why Raja Ampat has this level of marine biodiversity richness?

Raja Ampat is located in the most western part of Papua island that belongs to Indonesia. Its location is on the path of Indonesia Throughflow - the most extensive water movement on earth from Pacific Ocean in the north to the Indian in the south. This rich water flows through over 1800 Raja Ampat islands brings all the nutrients needed by the coral reefs to flourish.

In 2004 Conservation International (CI), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), WWF Indonesia, and the Raja Ampat Regency local government established Indonesia's first Marine Protected Area (MPA). Over time, the area protected by the MPA is expanded. Thanks to this outstanding achievement, it manages to preserve marine life underwater.

If you're looking for a truly off-the-beaten-path destination, Raja Ampat is the place for you. This remote archipelago in Indonesia is home to some of the most pristine and biodiverse marine ecosystems in the world. With over 1,500 islands to explore, Raja Ampat offers a unique opportunity to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of modern life and immerse yourself in nature. And if you're more of a landlubber, there are plenty of opportunities to hike through the lush rainforest and spot rare bird species. But perhaps the best part of visiting Raja Ampat is the chance to experience the local culture. How to get to Raja Ampat

To reach Raja Ampat, you will need to take a domestic flight to Sorong. To get to Domine Eduard Osok Airport (IATA: SOQ, ICAO: WASS), we would suggest taking a direct flight from Jakarta (CGK) or Manado (MDC) airports.

Pro tips: if you have few days extra holidays, fly to Manado via Singapore and stay with a land-based resort either in Bunaken or Lembeh. It will be beneficial in getting rid of the jet lag and doing some check dives in top-class dive sites.

We recommend Manado because Sorong is a small harbour city with no activities to offer.

It is common to witness guests who just took intercontinental flights could not wake up (let alone dive) in time, hence not enjoying the first couple days in Raja Ampat.

At the moment, there is no direct flight from Bali to Sorong. You will need to do transit in Makassar (UPG), and sometimes the flight schedule requires you to overnight in this city. There is a hotel within 5 minutes walking inside the airport if you need to take this option.

Once you arrived in Sorong, you will need to take a 10-minute drive to the harbour. Most operators include this car transfer in their holiday packages. Some high end operator will even have a porter looking for you at the luggage collection area.
If you book with a Liveaboard, the pier will be your embarkation point.

If you book with land-based operators, you will need to take boat trip(s) before arriving at your resort. Depends on their location, some resorts will meet you at Sorong pier and take you to the resort island by their fast boat. Meanwhile, some will require you to take the ferry to Waisai Island before picking you up with their fast boat.

We will be more than happy to assist you in booking your domestic flight, car transfers, or ferry ticket in Sorong.
