Your private air-conditioned vehicle and English-speaking guide collect you from your Manado hotel. The 45-minute drive up into the highlands is a scenic warm-up — terraced hillsides, clove trees, and the first glimpses of volcanic peaks emerging above the clouds.

Bring a light jacket. The highlands are noticeably cooler than coastal Manado, especially in the early morning.

Tomohon Traditional Market

Start early — the market is at its most vivid and authentic before 09:00. One of the most famous markets in all of Indonesia, Tomohon is known for its extraordinary range of produce: exotic meats, fresh spices, tropical fruits, and smoked fish. An honest, unfiltered window into Minahasan daily life.

Your guide will walk you through each section, explain what everything is, and make sure you feel comfortable navigating the experience at your own pace.

Photography is welcomed by most vendors — always ask first. An open mind is the only requirement.

▸ Mahawu Volcano — Crater Hike

A moderate 30–40 minute hike on a well-maintained trail leads to the rim of Mahawu crater at 1,324m. The reward: an active volcanic crater with steaming fumaroles, a small acidic crater lake, and sweeping panoramic views across the highland plateau and towards Manado Bay on a clear morning.

The descent takes 20–25 minutes. Total time on the mountain including a rest at the top is about 90 minutes.

Wear closed-toe shoes. The path is rocky but clearly marked. Your guide will brief you on the sulphur vents at the rim before you ascend.

▸Lunch at Lake Tondano updated

Lake Tondano is the largest lake in North Sulawesi — a vast, calm expanse of water nestled inside an ancient volcanic caldera at 600m altitude, ringed by hills and fishing villages. Lunch is at a lakeside restaurant with open-air views directly over the water — one of the most scenic dining spots in the entire highlands.

The local speciality here is ikan mas woku — freshwater golden carp cooked in the aromatic Minahasan woku herb paste of lemongrass, turmeric, pandan, and chilli. The fish is sourced directly from the lake in front of you.

After eating, a short walk along the lakeside gives a view of the traditional bamboo fish-trap structures used by local fishermen for generations. 

▸ Lake Linow — Volcanic Colour Lake

This volcanic sulphur lake shifts between turquoise, emerald, and yellow-green depending on sulphur concentration and the angle of light. The lakeside is dotted with steaming vents and populated by birds rarely seen on the coast. Sit down, breathe in the highland air, and enjoy a cup of locally-grown Minahasa arabica at the lakeside café.

A natural, relaxed stop — a welcome contrast after the volcano hike. This is where you catch your breath before lunch.

▸Sawangan Waruga Site — Ancient Megalith Tombs

The waruga are pre-Christian stone sarcophagi of the Minahasa people, some over 2,000 years old. The Sawangan site holds one of the largest collections in North Sulawesi — dozens of intricately carved stone coffins arranged across a peaceful open-air site shaded by large trees.

Each waruga is unique, carved with human figures, animals, and geometric patterns reflecting the social status and beliefs of the person buried within. Your guide will bring the stories to life in a way no sign or brochure can.

A sacred and genuinely moving site. Dress respectfully — covered shoulders and knees are appreciated. The atmosphere is calm, not morbid.

▸Return to Manado — scenic coastal route

Your guide takes the scenic coastal road back into the city where possible. If timing allows, a brief roadside stop to pick up cakalang fufu — North Sulawesi's famous smoked skipjack tuna — to take home as an edible souvenir of the Minahasa region.
