Tanjung Puting Tour

Discover Tanjung Puting: Trek lush jungles, cruise pristine rivers, and meet wild orangutans in Borneo’s ultimate eco-adventure paradise!

Tanjung Puting

Tanjung Puting National Park sits on the southern coast of Central Kalimantan, on the island of Borneo. It's one of the best places in the world to see wild orangutans, along with proboscis monkeys, gibbons, hornbills, and a network of blackwater rivers lined with tropical rainforest. Tours are run aboard a traditional wooden houseboat called a klotok, which serves as your transport, dining room, and sleeping quarters for the duration of the trip.

This is a slow-paced, nature-focused trip — not a diving or beach holiday. It suits travelers who enjoy wildlife, rivers, and a simple, unplugged pace of travel.

Itinerary

Day 1: Kumai — Tanjung Harapan — Sekonyer River Arrival at Iskandar Airport in Pangkalan Bun, transfer to the port town of Kumai, and boarding of the klotok. The boat cruises up the Sekonyer River into the park. First stop is Tanjung Harapan feeding station, where rehabilitated orangutans are sometimes seen at the ranger platform. Overnight on the boat, moored along the river.

Day 2: Pondok Tanggui — Camp Leakey Morning visit to Pondok Tanggui, a second feeding and release station, followed by a longer stretch further upriver to Camp Leakey, the park's best-known research station, established by Dr. Biruté Galdikas in the 1970s. This is usually the highlight of the trip, with a good chance of seeing orangutans at close range, including some well-known older individuals who frequent the area. Afternoon river cruising offers opportunities to spot proboscis monkeys gathering in trees along the banks near dusk. Overnight on the boat.

Day 3: Return to Kumai Early morning on the river before heading back downstream to Kumai, with a stop at a local village or market depending on timing. Transfer to the airport for departure, or on to your next destination.
